What we're working on right now:
In 2023, Mayes County was awarded a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant to fund the development of three key planning initiatives:
A Comprehensive Safety Action Plan
A Safe Routes to School Plan
An updated Mayes County Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan
This opportunity was made possible thanks to the Grand Gateway Economic Development Association (GGEDA), which served as the lead grant applicant. Mayes County designated the Mayes County Trails Alliance (MCTA) as the liaison between the county and GGEDA. MCTA then engaged Olsson to lead the planning process.
Throughout the project, steering and executive committees met regularly to guide the work. The planning process included stakeholder interviews, public surveys, and community open houses—all designed to ensure the final plan reflected broad community input and ownership.
The planning process is now complete, and the finalized plan is available for download by clicking the image to the left. The next step is for Mayes County and its municipalities to formally adopt the plan. With this roadmap in place, local communities are better positioned to apply for funding to bring the plan to life. Several promising grant opportunities are on the horizon, and both GGEDA and the local TSET program are prepared to assist with application efforts.
Moving forward, the Mayes County Trails Alliance will continue to support implementation efforts through advocacy and letters of support.
This accomplishment was made possible through our strong partnership with GGEDA, TSET Healthy Living Program (housed at Mayes County HOPE), municipalities, and school districts. The grant also required matching contributions, which were generously provided by Salina Public Schools, the Town of Locust Grove, the Town of Chouteau, the City of Pryor Creek, and MidAmerica Industrial Park.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to these partners and to everyone who submitted letters of support. We’re excited about what lies ahead and the positive impact this work will have on the future of Mayes County!
